In Mithila, women have painted the tree of life on the walls of their homes for centuries — at weddings, at births, at every moment worth marking. The tree stands at the centre. Deer graze at its roots. Birds settle in its branches. It is a picture of a world in balance, and it has been drawn the same way for longer than anyone can trace.

We have taken that motif off the wall and put it on the back of a tee, rendered in thread rather than pigment. A lotus sits on the chest in the same palette — terracotta, rust and cream, the colours Madhubani has always used because they came from the earth itself.

Built on 240 GSM cotton terry with a drop-shoulder oversized fit. Bio-washed and silicone-finished, so it arrives soft and stays that way.

About the Art

Madhubani, also called Mithila painting, comes from the Mithila region of Bihar and is one of India's oldest continuous folk traditions. It is defined by dense linework, flat fields of earth-toned colour, and motifs drawn from nature and myth — the tree of life among the most enduring of them. The form holds a Geographical Indication tag, and the artists who keep it alive are overwhelmingly women working in the same villages their grandmothers did.

Why Embroidery, Not Print

A print sits on the fabric. Embroidery becomes part of it. There is nothing to crack, peel or fade at the edges after twenty washes, and the raised thread catches light the way the original brushwork catches it on a mud wall. It takes far longer to produce and costs considerably more to make, which is exactly why almost nobody does it at this scale on a tee.

Styling

Sits naturally with washed denim, brown or rust utility trousers, and anything earth-toned. The off-white base keeps the artwork as the only thing asking for attention, so let the rest of the outfit stay quiet.
