From across a room this reads as texture. Step nearer and a face resolves out of it — crowned, wide-eyed, framed in concentric rings of triangles and discs, the way a deity is carved into the stone above a temple doorway to watch everyone who passes beneath.

The whole panel is embroidered in a single thread tone on a matching base. No contrast, no colour doing the work — only the height of the stitch and the way light falls across it. The chest carries a pair of eyes in the same technique. It is the quietest piece we make and the one people stop to look at.

Built on 240 GSM cotton terry with a drop-shoulder oversized fit. Bio-washed and silicone-finished, so it arrives soft and stays that way.

Why Tonal Embroidery

Most embroidered tees rely on colour contrast to carry the design. Take the colour away and there is nowhere to hide — every line has to sit at the right height, every fill has to catch light differently from the one beside it, or the whole panel flattens into nothing. Done properly, the artwork changes as you move and as the light shifts. It is far harder to execute than a coloured design and impossible to fake with print.

Styling

Strongest against black — the tee is the only thing in the outfit doing anything, and it should stay that way. Also works with washed denim or dark khaki.

• Do not iron directly on the embroidery
• Line dry in shade; avoid tumble drying to protect the stitchwork
