Warli Oversized T-Shirt — The Procession Never Stopped

Warli is drawn with three shapes. A circle for the sun, a triangle for the body, a square for the sacred enclosure. From those three, the Warli people of the Sahyadri hills have painted their entire world onto mud walls for centuries — harvests, weddings, funerals, and above all the procession, figures moving together in a line that never quite ends.

The back carries a full temple procession: a gopuram rising at the centre, a caparisoned elephant beneath it, a row of drummers below, and bands of village life running above and under. The chest carries two figures around a sun disc, embroidered in raised thread. Teal blue base, ochre artwork — the colours of a village lit by diyas.

Built on 240 GSM cotton terry with a drop-shoulder oversized fit. Bio-washed and silicone-finished, so it arrives soft and stays that way.

About the Art

Warli painting comes from the Sahyadri range in Maharashtra and is among the oldest continuous folk traditions in India, with motifs traced back thousands of years. It was made almost entirely by women, painted in rice paste on mud walls, and every figure is built from the same three shapes. The form carries a Geographical Indication tag and is still practised in the same villages it began in.

Why the Detail Matters

Warli lives or dies on linework. Every figure is a few strokes wide, and at the density of a full temple procession there is nowhere for a cheap process to hide — lines thicken, figures merge, and the whole panel turns to mud. This one is printed fine enough to hold each drummer separate, on a 240 GSM body heavy enough that the panel sits flat instead of rippling. The chest motif is embroidered so the artwork carries some weight where you actually see it.

Styling

Made for sand, khaki and cream bottoms — the tonal contrast is the whole point. Also works with washed denim if you want it dialled down.
